October is American Archives Month

Pieces of history, whether articles, photographs, or videos, all paint a picture of our past. Two years ago, a trio of volunteers from Greensburg Art Center took a closer look behind the doors at shelves full of labeled binders…lots and lots of labeled binders!  What a wonderful discovery that early members (1929) kept meticulous records, including meeting minutes, treasurer reports, newspaper clippings, even results of the bridge card party fundraisers!  Unfortunately, some photos were brittle, and most pages were dark yellow.  It didn’t take long for the three women* to realize they needed to ensure the long-term protection of the past, while making our history accessible to our current and future members.  A trip to Pittsburgh’s Compucom, Inc. (a company who has been providing Document Management Solutions for over 40 years) was the answer.  Dave, our Account Mgr., gave us a personal tour and explained the variety of options available.  It was a delight to see one of our binders converted onto a flash-drive, and to see it clearly on the computer screen.  Files, whether they originate from a library, an art museum, a municipality, a medical center, or a grandma’s trunk in the attic can be converted into a variety of digital and film formats.  As we celebrate our 95th year of providing art to the community, we are excited about using this new preservation technology.                                                                                                              *(Nancy Dalverny, Shirleah Kelly and Olga Herbert)

Funding for Preserving our Past for the Future project was provided by the Greensburg Foundation Fund- Universal Grant Agreement of The Pittsburgh Foundation

FUNDRAISER DONATION REQUEST

The Westmoreland /Frick Hospital Foundation is requesting donations of artwork for an upcoming fundraising event to benefit the Heart, Lung, and Vascular Institute.  The institute offers minimally invasive procedures that include mitral valve repair / replacement, Watchman Implant -a minimally invasive procedure for people with atrial fibrillation and more.  The items will be part of an auction that will be held at the “Black Tie for Hearts” event on March 23,2024 at the Greensburg Country Club.  Please look in your stash of 2D or 3D art for pieces that you are willing to donate to a great cause.  We will receive positive publicity and your closet will be free to add more pieces to it.  You can drop off your piece at the art center by March 9– make sure to put a tag on the piece to include your name, title of painting, medium and estimated value.  MAKE SURE TOO – place a label on it ‘ATTN: ROSE SOVYAK’.  We don’t want to get them mixed up with the Art on the Vine Donation, which we would love to have a piece for that event as well.  Contact Rose Sovyak for more information.

Eileen Yeager will be the featured artist at the Greensburg-Hempfield library joint program. “Picture This at the Library” exhibition. Her exhibition is entitled “World of Herbs” and will run from March 23 through April 27,2024. World of Herbs explores different countries around the world and how they use herbs and spices in their food and drink. Many of the pieces in the show represent individual countries and each piece is an original etching of a bouquet of native plants in that country. Would you like to exhibit it at the library in 2024?
