Rowe Memorial Garden

A special garden area in memory of Kay and Bill Rowe is in the planning stages. Patty Schildkamp is a master gardener and is helping to plan an area to the left of the steps going into the Gallery. It will include a path leading to a bench, a boulder with dedication plaque, perennials and annuals. Donations are being accepted to honor the memory of these special Greensburg Art Club members.

Take 982N from Route 30. In 1.5 miles turn right on to Raymond Avenue. After 900 feet, turn left on to Edward Street. In .7 miles look on the right for a green fence surrounding Peoples Gas wells. Make an immediate right on to Stonehouse Lane.

Education

The fall classes have begun or are beginning over the next couple of weeks.

Be sure to check out the full schedule on the web site greensburgartcenter.org.

The Wednesday clay classes have met. The Tuesday and Thursday classes will be organized soon.

 

Annual membership dues are due by December 31.

Any dues paid recently and through December 31 will be for membership to the end of 2021.

                               THINKING AHEAD AT GAC

  • The officers of Greenburg Art Club are responsible for guiding the Art Center to remain a welcoming and nurturing place for artists of all ages and abilities.
    On November 9 the membership will vote on a candidate for each office. The new officers will take charge January 1, 2021.  To begin this process, all 300+ members of Greensburg Art Club are invited to nominate themselves or other members they feel would be responsible candidates for any of the offices.   • Sarah Hunter Exhibition. THURSDAY, October 22, 6-9pm
  • “What Now?” exhibited by Sarah Hunter. at Bottleworks, 411 3rd Avenue, Johnstown.  Free and open to the public.
  • Monitor Manager
    Loretta Wolfe has agreed to schedule the volunteers and take responsibility for finding substitutes when necessary. This “work from home” job
    was completed by Alice O’Brian.  Thank you, Alice for your service.

DARKROOM Rental – Available are several enlargers and the necessary trays, sink, safe light, timers, etc.  Chemicals are NOT included in the rental cost.     Photo paper is FREE.  Bring your materials and have fun developing!   Cost:  $5/3 hours   $25/Week         INTERESTED? The Westmoreland is accepting proposals for Pop-Up Exhibitions, which are held in the Robertshaw Gallery (adjacent to the lobby on the 1st floor). Artists working in all media will be considered. Site-specific installations are welcome. Guidelines for submitting proposals are available at: www.thewestmoreland.org/about/opportunities.

Art Show @ Pitt-Greensburg
The 4th Annual Art Show @ Pitt-Greensburg is going virtual!    The exhibit will run online September 25 through October 8 and is open to artists of all ages and skill levels.  Winners will be announced at the Artists Awards Virtual Recognition on October 8 at 6 p.m.                                                        Should you have any questions about the event, please don’t hesitate to contact me.                                               Julia Sefcheck pgaa@pitt.edu

The Artist Market and Gift Shop are open to the public!

This 2nd Annual “Art Neighbors Show” is a joint member exhibition  between the Greensburg Art Center and Latrobe Art Center showing off the artistic talent of our two art communities.
Andrew Julo from St. Vincent College  was the juror and selected the following:

There were more than 81 artists and 150 entries.  Andrew Julo stated, “Now more than ever, we need artists to make visible the Hidden Rhythms of Life as experiences of wonder, excitement, beauty and awe.”

CAFE ART
Cafe Art is planned for Sept 17, 6-8:00 PM with a presentation by the Art Neighbors juror, Andrew Julo.
The building will be open for viewing the Art Neighbors show with social distancing and masks.

It is with sincere sadness that we acknowledge the death August 8 of our dear friend and benefactor, Kay Rowe. Thanks to those who have already made donations to Greensburg Art Center in Kay’s name. The 2nd Annual “Art Neighbors Show” is a joint exhibition including Greensburg Art Center
and Latrobe Art Center. Artwork from member artists of both art centers will hang side-by-side, showing off the artistic talent of our two art communities.
Andrew Julo from St. Vincent College will juror the awards. Over $1500 in cash will be awarded.
Awards will be announced at the Opening Reception August 15. This reception will be outdoors with a limited number of people at a time entering the Gallery to view the show.

THINKING AHEAD AT GAC

and nurturing place for artists of all ages and abilities. The 2 year terms for the present officers will expire at the end of 2020. In October, a slate of candidates will be presented to the club at the General Membership Meeting.  After a month for review, in November the membership will vote on a candidate for each office. The new officers will take charge January 1, 2021.

Another pressing matter is the need for monitors at the center. 
Monitors manage the center, answer the phone, greet visitors, process sales of art works and more. They are scheduled for 1-3 times a month, either 10-1:00 or 1-4:00 or Thursday evening. The center couldn’t be open without these valuable volunteers. Call Shirleah at 412-915-0301 or Pat 724-244-6584 to become a monitor.
PERK;  POINTS earned monitoring can be applied to class and workshop tuition.
Another very important need: Monitor Manager.
This is someone who would schedule the volunteers and take responsibility for finding substitutes when necessary. Alice O’Brien has done this job for years and is retiring. Alice would be happy to help anyone who is willing to take over. Call Shirleah, Pat or Alice if you are interested in this “work from home” job.

MONITORS   volunteer for 3-hour shifts.  They are trained by experienced monitors. A packet of info on duties and procedures are given to you.  A MONITOR REWARDS PROGRAM in place enables you to earn points based on the number of shifts you take.  These points translate into discounts that can be applied to your tuition for classes and workshops–NOT to items  in the gift shop.   Points and percentages are compiled once every four months. Latrobe Art Center-Open Division Awards:   Doris Wood won the Latrobe Art League Award for  Guilty Pleasures.  Stacey Pydynkowski won Honorable Mention for Petals and Thorns.  Peg Panasiti won 3rd Place for White.

MEMBER NEWS: Jasmine Lear and her family have moved to Oklahoma.  Her new address is: 1202 N. Main Street, Sand Springs, OK, 74063.  We wish Jasmine success in her new locale and trust that her phenomenal talents will help her achieve additional accomplishments in the art world!

RE-OPENING OF GREENSBURG ART CENTER

The Greensburg Art Center will begin to reopen its doors in June.
The Greensburg Art Center’s Gift Shop will open to the public July 7 with a reduced schedule.

The Art Neighbors Show is scheduled for August 15 – October 3.
Register for the show by sending a $25 entry fee and the prospectus entry form to July 24 to

Andrew Julo from St. Vincent College will juror the awards. Over $1500 in cash will be awarded.
Awards will be announced at the Opening Reception August 15. This reception will be outdoors with a limited number of people at a time entering the gallery to view the show

 

The Art of Gifting holiday show and sale is scheduled for October 24 – December 21. This annual sale of fine crafts and gifts will address social distancing issues as needed but will remain, as always, an important venue for our artisans.

The Art on the Vine Fundraiser for 2020 is moved to 2021. Plans will be announced after the first of the year and will depend on directions from the CDC and NIH.

Gifts of this type will range from $75 to $275.   Payments can be made by check, credit card, or PayPal.  PRICES INCLUDE PLANTING AND PLAQUES.

New donations toward this project will wait until Spring, and an additional area of landscaping will have to be considered.

MONITORS   volunteer for 3-hour shifts.  They are trained by experienced monitors. A packet of info on duties and procedures are given to you.  A MONITOR REWARDS PROGRAM in place enables you to earn points based on the number of shifts you take.  These points translate into discounts that can be applied to your tuition for classes and workshops–NOT to items  in the gift shop.   Points and percentages are compiled once every four months. Four shifts equal a 10% discount.   Monitor more often, and your discount increases. Go to greensburgartcenter.org and click on the “welcome” printed in white letters under the paint tubes. The Westmoreland is accepting proposals for Pop-Up Exhibitions, which are held in the Robertshaw Gallery (adjacent to the lobby on the 1st floor). Artists working in all media will be considered. March 2020 Newsletter

The Collaboration Exhibit was designed to encourage artists to work together to create an art piece representative of their joint efforts. The aim of the exhibition is to enable artists to share ideas, points of views, and to create something that may abandon rules that guide the individual efforts. Paintings, ceramic and other mediums will offer the visitor new experiences in the value of cooperative endeavors. The exhibition will continue through March 21, 2020.

“ART ON THE VINE” (our annual fundraiser) will be held Saturday, April 18, 2020, 6-9:00 PM
The theme this year is Toulouse-Lautrec at the Moulin Rouge. Come with us to Paris!!!

The committee has met and made plans that include food tables, paired wines, live music, a photo booth, a caricaturist, a papier mache trapeze artist and much more.
The traditional favor of a hand painted wine glass will require several volunteers. We plan to meet every Thursday in February, 1:00 – 8:00. Consider joining this group and take a part in raising funds for Greensburg Art Center.
Another tradition is the  SILENT AUCTION. This is your opportunity to make a piece of your work available to the community. Save a piece for this worthy cause. We will collect that work in April.

  • Susan E. Laansma Pollins was Honored in “Master Visual Artist Vii:  Preserving the Legacy”, an exhibition shown at the Barensfeld Gallery at the Heinz History Center.  Artists were chosen for lifetime works, achievements and contributions to the arts in Western Pennsylvania.  It runs through September 2020.The January 9th Reception was awesome.

Call for Entries!

The Collaboration Exhibit Registration Design/Details— The Collaboration Exhibit is designed to encourage artists to work together to create an art piece representative of their joint efforts. The aim of the exhibition is to enable artists to share ideas, points of views, and to create something that may abandon rules that guide the individual efforts.  A major stipulation is that one person of the team must be a member of GAC,  and that the team create a single entry (which may consist of multiple pieces).   GAC members may participate in more than one team. Susan E. Laansma Pollins is being Honored in”Master Visual Artist VII:  Preserving the Legacy”, an exhibition shown at the Barensfeld Gallery at the Heinz History Center.  Artists were chosen for lifetimeworks, achievements and contributions to the arts in Western Pennsylvania.  It begins December 14 and runs through September 2020.We are encouraging all to attend the Opening Reception on January 9 at 5:30pm.  Admission is Free. MONITORS   Monitors volunteer for 3-hour shifts.  They are trained by experienced monitors. A packet of info on duties and procedures are given to you.  A MONITOR REWARDS PROGRAM in place enables you to earn points based on the number of shifts you take. These points translate into discountsthat can be applied to yourtuition for classes and workshops–NOT to items  in the gift shop.   Points and percentages are compiled once every four months. Four shifts equal a 10% discount.   Monitor more often, and your discount increases. Go to greensburgartcenter.org and click on the “welcome” printed in white letters under the paint tubes. STANDING COMMITTEES IN NEED OF NEW VOLUNTEERS – If you have even a little bit of time and can help sporadically, we could use some new faces for these committees – Gallery (extra hands to install exhibits, do mailings, handle receiving and pickup, set up for openings, and refreshments), Facilities help.

Exhibition Opportunuty: The Westmoreland Museum of American Art: Call for Pop-Up Exhibition Proposals. The Westmoreland is accepting proposals for Pop-Up Exhibitions, which are held in the Robertshaw Gallery (adjacent to the lobby on the 1st floor). Artists working in all media will be considered. Site-specific installations are welcome. Guidelines for submitting proposals are available at: www.thewestmoreland.org/about/opportunities/
